Hola!

Yesterday I went into Katatura (the community that Beautiful Gate is
in) to help Laura (one of the volunteers) give out food packages to
families of some of our kids. The packages consisted of a head of
lettuce, carrots, potatoes, maize meal, and instant soup. It was a
very eye opening experience and also a heart-breaking one. I'm living
in a modest house on the base but I'm still cold at night and these
people are living in shacks made of sheet metal walls and roofs and
whatever they can put in the cracks to keep out the wind. It really
makes you appreciate the things you have, even if you didn't think
they were a lot to begin with.

You may be wondering what the meaning of the subject is. "TIA" is an
abbreviation for "This Is Africa" a saying most of us have a adopted
for situations that are weird or uncomfortable. It's a nice way of
saying "You can't change and you can't go home so just take what
you're given and deal". Handwashing clothes? TIA. Cars on the wrong
side of the road? TIA. The ants found my fruit loops and i had to pick
them out of my cereal this morning? TIA.

Last night some of us drove out to Okapuka which is a restaurant and
small game reserve. We had good food and saw giraffe, warthog, kudu,
oryx, springbok and hartenbees. It was a lot of fun.

I'm excited about this next week because a team from Waco is coming so
I'll get to see a few familiar faces.

I guess that about does it for today. Please keep praying for God to
give me strength (physical and spiritual).

I love you guys,

Joshua
