In her 74 years on Earth, country music legend Dolly Parton has written over 3,000 songs. Combine her musical prowess with the ubiquitousness of the Netflix holiday movie and you get Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square, a new Christmas musical.
In this opening song, the Angel played by Dolly Parton sits in the square dressed as a less fortunate citizen asking for change. She sings about the real spirit of Christmas as a time for caring, giving, singing, joy and love, while the townsfolk sing along, dance, and do various small-town tasks. Baranski's Regina joins in introducing her own desire to get out of the town.
Lewis plays Margeline, the owner of Le Beauty Shop on the town square and the closest thing Regina has to a friend. In this song, she reveals a little backstory about Regina's past relationship with high school sweetheart Carl and reiterates that what Regina is doing is just mean.
Angel sings Regina a story of the Scottish Lamplighter, based on the poem by Robert Lewis Stevenson, reminding her of why her father built the town and surrounded the square with old fashioned street lamps.
The Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" came top of a 2013 Spotify poll to find out which songs music fans most commonly hear people singing incorrectly. Many believe Annie Lennox is singing: "Sweet dreams are made of cheese, who am I to disagree?"

The song, which mixes traditional Chinese styles and instruments with elements of modern Western rock, was adopted by student protesters in Tiananmen as their anthem. Though on their face, the lyrics are about a person being scorned by a lover because he has nothing, they have been interpreted as being about the dispossessed, disillusioned youth.
Although traditional square dance music was danced to live musicians in a square dance band, some of these recordings were used extensively as modern western square dance became more and more popular.

This square tea tray by ceramicist Wang Wen De is based on a traditional Chinese musical notation system called gongche notation. Whereas his earlier works used patterns of circular holes to represent individual notes, this latest line takes a more literal approach: the actual notations in the form of Chinese characters are meticulously carved directly into the tray.
The Town Square is a small park area, featuring two strips of groundcover Grass with several benches, some planters with Shrubs and Trees, and a few random Flowers. The center of the square (which is actually a paved oval area) is dominated by the Town's Harmony Stone, a large, white, egg-shaped object with several stones embedded in it that light up when certain goals have been met ("achieving Harmony").
Did you?
No, but it did help us convince them that we needed to revitalize and that a public square would be the perfect centrepiece. We called it Yonge Dundas, but just so people would know the location when we were talking about the project. It was never supposed to be a permanent name.
Spend a few hours in "a little bit of Eden" at Paradise Square, a new original musical on Broadway in the 2022 season. With a cast of 40 to perform rousing ensemble songs and vibrant dance numbers choreographed by dance legend Bill T. Jones, Paradise Square is a return to the mega-musicals of the 1990s and the early 2000s, sharing themes and styles with shows like Ragtime that have come before it.
Paradise Square has a large writing team. The musical has four bookwriters: Christina Anderson, Marcus Gardley, Larry Kirwan and Craig Lucas, all of whom are veteran playwrights. There are also four people behind the music of Paradise Square. Original music is by Jason Howland, and original lyrics by Masi Asare and Nathan Tysen, but in addition to original songs, Paradise Square also features existing music penned by the 19th-century "father of American music" Stephen Foster. He's known for parlor and minstrel songs like "Oh! Susanna" and "Camptown Races," both of which feature in Paradise Square.
Paradise Square contains both original music by Jason Howland, Masi Asare, and Nathan Tysen, as well as tunes from the songbook of Stephen Foster, like "Oh! Susanna" and "Angelina Baker." Foster is a character in the musical, too, and the plot explores how he profited off stories and music originated by enslaved Black people, so the use of his songs both acknowledges and interrogates the history behind them. Below are all the songs in Paradise Square and the characters that sing them.
