Despite all of the blood and carnage, the movie's main theme is "never judge a book by its cover," as it turns the old "evil hillbilly" horror movie cliche on its ear. A city girl learns to look past a man's rough exterior and see the kind, decent person he is inside. Characters also attempt to work together to solve problems and resolve conflict.
Director/co-writer Eli Craig makes his feature debut with a simple, ingenious idea. Why are hillbillies always so nasty and evil in horror movies? What if they're really good folks, and the college students are the awful ones? The movie takes this idea and runs all the way with it, allowing audiences to catch on at their own pace.

Tobe Hooper's 1974 slasher, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, is a gruesome staple of the horror genre. Known for its graphic depictions of cannibalism, the film garnered both praise and criticism for its excessive scenes of violence. In a comical parody of an iconic horror moment, Dale is seen frantically waving his chainsaw in the air, a sight which convinces the campers that he and Tucker are in fact, evil. While his wild and seemingly crazed reaction mirrors Leatherface, the cannibalistic, chainsaw toting antagonist of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the harmless Dale is simply trying to escape a swarm of angered bees.
For instance, as Tucker McGee (Tudyk) and Dale Dobson (Labine) make their way to the former's newly purchased West Virginian vacation home to fix it up, they encounter a group of college students whose preconceived biases against the local rural population puts them all on a collision course that results in a humorous, but bloody mess with several people dead. Of course, the film's events could've been avoided if they all just stopped and talked to each other, but the students assume the compassionate but odd-looking duo plans to harm them. This is because the group leader, Chad (Jesse Moss), lost his mother after he was born since she was attacked in a "hillbilly massacre" in the same woods 20 years earlier and convinces the others of their evil (but imaginary) intentions.
Chad is portrayed as a cunning character who is manipulative and has great fighting skills. However, his character sums him up to be someone who was broken. Even though they can do good, proven by the film's protagonists, Chad views hillbillies as irredeemably evil since the day his mother was raped by a hillbilly from a gang that attacked her party.
When he was in college, he was in a group of other college students going to the woods to camp. There, they meet friendly hillbillies Tucker and Dale, who save one of the students, Allison from drowning. But the students are led to think that she was kidnapped and try to rescue her leading to their accidental deaths. Thinking they where killed by Tucker and Dale, Chad is convinced that they are evil and must be killed.

Eli Craig says: I saw Ghostbusters when I was a kid, and I think, to some degree, there was a part of that which came out in Tucker & Dale as well.
It was another loser-hero story, and it's so big and over the top. I love Bill Murray's nonchalant wit so much, plus that line "He slimed me!" When he gets slimed, there's this nonchalance to the danger. It's like there's this imminent danger of this apocalypse happening and these guys are the biggest screw-ups in the world taking on and defeating this apocalypse. I don't know. There's something that will always resonate with me about screw-ups winning a war against evil.
