I hope we can all get together on May 4th to talk about the Wind Up Bird. What a book! I just finished it and can't wait to hear what you all make of Murakami's strange and disturbing tale. Eric

Sorry I won't be there that weekend - will be in Las Vegas doing a bit of work, but more golfing with Dave. Sorry to miss this - wanted to discuss this book with you all. Have never liked it but can't quite figure out why.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

i need to talk about it, about how disturbing it is. i'm feeling it's become unreadable, sort of like i might not care what happens to toru. or i'm fearful that what might happen to him is so gory and whackadoodle that i can't empathize. who knows.

It does not seem that there is any real intimacy in the book amongst the characters.  Consequently everyone appears a bit "surface" to me and hard to connect with - (although May seems to be trying to make a deeper connection).  This generally makes it very hard to read the rougher stuff for me as well.  I love the descriptions of his time in the well though and that has kept me going.  Hoping it all comes together in a meaningful way in the end.
