This Surah is named al-Fatihah (Opening) because it is the opening of the Qur'an. It is the first surah in accordance with the order of the Mushaf, as well as the first sura that a Muslim reads when performing prayers.
It is called that based on the hadith of Ab Sa'id al-Khudri when he recited it to treat a man who was stung by a venomous animal. After that, Rasulullah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri:
This is based on the opinion of Yahya bin Abi Kathir, who according to him al-Fatihah is sufficient even without the other surahs, but the other surahs cannot be sufficient without the surah al-Fatihah.
Scholars differ on whether al-Fatihah is included in the Makkiyyah (revealed before the Hijrah) or Madaniyyah (revealed after the Hijrah). According to Ibn Abbas, Qatdah, and Ab al-'Aliyah, Surah al- Fatihah is Makkiyyah.
