While replacing the Oven baking element is it necessary to replace the
broiler element also ? The broiler element in the larger oven is not
working and the (t-stat ?) is no longer attached. Don't care if the
broiler works unless it has to !

Thanks,
TW - Mpls.

The one switch activates both the lower and upper elements. The thermostat bar is used to determine at what temperature the oven is at, if there is no thermostat, then the switch has a hard time determining a pre heated oven.

The thermostat is attached to the switch. If using the oven the way it is, no problem, and to answer your question, yes you can use the bottom element with out using the top element. If you want the broiler to work and to pre heat the oven, replace the switch, and then you can find out if the broiler is not working, or maybe its just the switch. One of my stoves I'm parting, out, I can get you a used switch with the thermostat and a used broiler also, its up to you, you can use the oven the way it is or if you get tired of the way it works, let me know. the used parts will be a lot cheaper than trying to locate new or rebuild the old, and it sounds like at this point it may not be worth it to you.

As you can see, by going on line, there are several Frigidaire Flair clubs and people ready to help. Theses stoves are becoming collectible, and they were built like a car so they seem to be lasting a lot longer than the new stoves.

The serial number you have provided tells me this, R  for range, CI, for custom imperial, H is the year, 1964,  and the 645 states it has the double ovens,\
Frigidaire produced these stoves from 1960 until 1968, sometimes you will see a V  or EH which indicates it is a fan model, where it came with its own fan system located on top of the stove to catch all the fumes, through its own filter, like it had its own recycling system.

I am sure you just got your fill of information,  be in touch if you need anything, thanks

Tom,

Great information, thanks !  The stove belongs to my in-laws in Missouri; they bought it new
back in the early 60's. They are only interested in using the baking element so I presume that is what we'll order since it will work on it's own. She just won't have the preheat option I think is what you're saying. Thanks again, I need all the help I can get !

are you saying, the bottom element does not work either? if both the top and bottom elements are not coming on at all then take a look at the clock and you will see 3 dials, the furtherest one to the right must say MAN, NOT OFF. IF IT STATES OFF, THE LARGE OVEN WILL NOT WORK AT ALL, IF YOU TURN IT TO MAN, THEN THE LARGE OVEN WILL WORK PROPERLY, let me know , I am a little confused, when you said you would order the baking element, which is the bottom one, I was under the impression the bottom one worked and top one did not work, let me know on that, its important.

Tom,

How difficult is it to replace the t-stat and switch ? Also, what price are you asking for the
stat and switch?

its not very hard, its just time consuming and takes some patience. If I can do it, you can do it.
Just look how the old switch is installed , follow all the wires and where they go and attach, and follow the 3 feet of coil wire attached to the thermostat rod and the best part is snaking out the old thermostat wire and putting in a new one, with out bending it in a million pieces, but its doable, just takes time, as for price, well, give me your address and I will mail this used switch and if it works for you, then we will settle on a good affordable price and , if it doesnt you  can mail it back to me. Talk to you later

Tom,
Sounds like a plan. It might be a little while to get it installed, I'm in Minnesota - inlaws are in Missouri but I'll get it to them and have their appliance repair man install it.
Address: 6224 Logan Ave South

Thanks again !

Tom,

I think the bottom bake element is ok from what I'm told. It was just the broken T-stat in the large oven that they are concerned with. Does it clamp on to the broiler element or is it soldered in place ? I haven't seen it or a picture of it yet.

The thermostat is connected to a wire that comes through a small hole in the top side of the large oven and the thermostat rod itself has two clips that clip it to the sidewall the right of you as you stand in front of the oven, it is closer to the top of the oven just under the broiler, it is suppose to run along side the top portion of the large oven, they sometimes break and fall off, and the only way to fix it is to replace the switch with a thermostat wire and rod. The hard part is to fish out the wire and its about 3 feet long, but coiled up and clipped to one of the large brackets by the oven light housing above the stove. Like I said it is timing consuming, but you have to remove the old and replace it with a working switch with the wire and the thermostat rod attached and put through the hole in the oven. If you don't have the clips to attach it to the oven wall you can bend it to hang there for now and find some clips later, the clips usually rust and break with time, and are hard to find and come people make their own clips to make it work. The purpose of the clips is to keep the thermostat from getting into your food, clear as mud, I know. But I can still walk you through, it, keep me posted

Tom,
Just checking to see if you received my email about paying for mailing the T-stat.
