Hello,

My wife and I are the new owners of an old Flair. We picked up a RCIB-645 on craigslist recently and have been working on fixing a few of its issues. I was excited to find out that this group exists -- there seems to be a lot of knowledge here and so much info is available in the archives of this group.

When we fist got the Flair set up the large oven would only reach 350 if the knob was set to 500. Looking around in the archives I found out about the adjustment screw located within the shaft of the oven temperature knob. I followed the steps listed and got it much closer to reality. The problem that persists is when my wife bakes the temperature seems to change – that is, when a pan is put into the oven (already preheated to the correct temp) the oven kicks on and climbs above the set temp. It has burnt a few things accidentally and I am wondering if anyone has had the same issue, and knows of a fix.

I also have a nonfunctioning Heat Minder and Speed heat burners – which sounds pretty common. The Infinate Heat burners work fine. I have a unit with 2 internal screw type fuses and noticed that the one in the top (speedheat) was burnt out. I replaced it with a 15amp fuse (same value that I removed) and it “worked” briefly (10 seconds or so) and stopped. I am assuming that the fuse blew again, but I haven’t checked it yet. Does anyone know the fuse values that originally came in the oven?

I’ve read that most problems with the Flair can be diagnosed with a multimeter. I am comfortable working with electronics, and have a multimeter… The problem is I don’t know what I should be looking for. I am hoping that some of you have had experience with this and can point me in the right direction.

Also, I have the “holy grail”. It’s likely that I will post it on here for sale or trade in the future. We are vegan so a rotisserie is pretty-much useless to us. :)

I’d really appreciate any advice you all can give me. Thanks in advance!

The way the speed heat works, is it puts 220 volts on a 120 volt elemtent for a short period of time. For the speed heat.
The controls go bad and some times are hard to find. Usually the control is replaced with any infinite heat switch, it functions a little different.

Thanks, Mark.

I would like to try to get it working if at all possible... I think the fuse value I have in there may be low but I don' t want to jump to a higher one without knowing the correct value. I don't see the fuse in the wiring diagram listed in the service manual.

If I can't get it fixed, do you know where I could track down an Infinite Heat switch? Can a similar switch be performed on the Heat Minder burner?

a lot of schematics don't have the fuse listed. We need to know the model and i am sure we can come up with a correct schematic. R stands for range, CI stands from Customer Imperial, might be a LETTER, then example "630 " 30 inches " OR " 645 "40 inches and finally a letter.

Dave, Tom or Loren may have a control or we find them on Ebay

Does anyone out there have a schmatic for the RCIB-645 ?

My model is RCIB-645 -- if you have a complete schematic for it and could email it to me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again!

JD,

I have the fuse out of my frigidaire. You can have it for free. I'm in Phoenix, AZ. I just looked at the fuse and it says 20AMP. See attached photo's.

Carl,
Thanks for the offer to give me the fuse and for attaching the pics,
but I just needed to know the fuse value. I had some of these fuses
around (my garage still uses them) and installed a 20amp and the speed
heat came back to life. I also calibrated the oven temps by following
the directions in the service manual - so they seem to be working
better.

Do you happen to have a large working burner you would be willing to
sell? I checked my heat minder burner with the multimeter and it is
burnt out. These are interchangeable throughout the all the different
models, right?

Does anyone else have a large working burner element they would be
willing to sell?

JD, thanks for getting back to me. Seems as though after selling almost everything from my flair, the last few parts aren't wanted.  Sorry I dont have any burners. Good luck.

Hello,
Replace your fuse with a 25 Amp fuse. Make sure your meter is on a
range to cover 220 or 110 v. I am sure you have discovered how the
burners tip up. Connect your meter via either clips or by putting them
into contact with the spades in the socket coming from the oven side,
might require a bit of contortion but i did it. Turn the burner to
high. If you have single leg line current 120 v. or so it is POSSIBLY
the fuse. If you have less than 120v. it is the Speed heat control.
The speed heat control is a mechanical marvel of a de-ranged King-
Sealy Control Company engineer who thought he should be working for
NASA on the Mercury Project. It contains bi-metallic strips designed
to delaminate with heat generated by the 220 draw through the switch.
After the speed heat period of about 30 seconds is over and return the
burner to 120v. operation. Robertshaw makes a universal control that
will replace the speed heat control and return the burner to a normal
120v burner. Mine works like a champ. On the bright side the element
will last almost forever on 120v. Check the burner for continuity if
it is open it is bad. if it has in the 10 Ohm range it meets spec. I
have the service and owners manuals on my computer but live in the
middle of nowhere and to upload or send them would be an overnight
event. My cell is currently serving as my internet connection and out
here it isn't 3G! Mine is the same model and we love it. I do most of
the cooking and it cooks at leat two meals a day, day in day out!
Also I am considering building some Meat Tender probes, good
components aren't cheap but I think I can build them to last for less
than 100.00
