Save Newton Villages!

Last week, local Nonantum business owner John Mula sold his 386-394 Watertown Street property, recently permitted for 3 floors and 10 units, to a California developer for $1.5 million—congrats, Mr. Mula.

That day, the new developer secured a commitment for a $5+ million construction loan to build a three-story, 10-unit project.

But just hours later, the developer marched into City Hall, claiming they needed a zoning change in the Nonantum Village center so they could get an extra floor, and a 30% density increase to make the project “financially feasible.”

What they DIDN’T do? Disclosure to the city that the bank already agreed to lend them millions as the project was financially feasible.

This isn’t about feasibility—it’s about greed. Developers are gaming the system for extra profit, while Newton residents bear the cost of No parking, more traffic, and vanishing neighborhood character.

The city council previously voted to rezone certain villages to comply with the state MBTA community act and at the time, committed to the residents to preserve the remaining villages' current zoning for those villages outside the state mandate.

Now, The City council is considering reneging on its commitment to the residents, and rezone a section of the Nonantum Village center

It’s time to speak up! Demand accountability. Demand transparency.
