In her final weeks, the mayor is trying to push her Newton Walk, Roll, and Bike Network Plan through the lame duck city council. The plan will involve the construction of more “road diets”. This means the narrowing of streets and potentially removing on-street parking to give more safe space for “multi-modal” paths. As we’ve seen with Needham St. and Washington St., this type of road re-configuration ultimately leads to more queuing of cars, air pollution, and displaced traffic in small neighborhood streets. The Newton Walk, Roll, and Bike Network Plan has already been approved by the Public Facilities Committee on 10/22 and will be discussed and likely voted on at the next city council meeting on 11/17. If you are concerned about the plan’s impact on the city or it being rushed to approval without proper review and public input, please email the city council at cityc...@newtonma.gov and ask them to vote NO.
