Newton Needs Change

Our kids deserve better!

It’s time to get to the truth!

Each side of the teacher strike debate is claiming the

other is providing misleading information

Meanwhile our kids are home asking why they can’t go to school

FACT CHECK

PARENTAL LEAVE

CURRENT BENEFIT:

  • 8 weeks paid (primary parent)

(10 days by district/30 by sick days*/sick bank)

  • 4 weeks paid (non-primary parent

(10 days by district/11 by sick days)

Teachers Union: Under state law, all private sector workers in Massachusetts are entitled to 12 paid weeks of family medical leave and an additional 12 weeks for bonding with new children.

NTA PROPOSAL

  • 12 weeks paid by district for primary and non - primary
  • No use of sick leave/bank
  • Cost: $991,000

*NTA Unit A employees accrue 14 sick days per year.

School Committee: Newton is not a private employer. Municipalities (public employee) is exempt from private employment law. Collective bargaining contracts govern all.

NPS REVISED PROPOSAL

1.22.24

  • 9 weeks paid (primary parent)

(15 by district, 30 by sick days/sick bank)

  • 6 weeks paid (non-primary parent)

(15 by district, 14 by accumulated sick days)

  • Cost - $420,000

Truth:

School Committee

Newton has one of the most generous

leave contracts in the state!

Parental leave is in addition to other times off including:

  • 14 sick days, plus an additional 1 day for ever year of employment up to 14 additional days (with a carry over of 15 days)
  • 11 days to care for other family members,
  • 2 personal days for anything they like
  • 4 emergency days for other unforeseen issues

*In addition, staff have all rights under FMLA. NTA are asking for paid FMLA to care for any family member.

**the law protects staff to be able to take off time for children's education needs, meetings etc.

***Staff can take medical leaves paid with their sick time and they draw from a sick bank.

****staff receive professional development release time every week

We need honest and factual information

Our kids deserve better!
