Journalists’ unions are to organise a demonstration to express its anger over the violent attack on Hong Kong journalists in Beijing last week. Two journalists were assaulted by unidentified men while covering an attempt by an activist to visit Madam Liu Xia, wife of jailed Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo. One of them was pushed to the ground and kicked by five plainclothes men.
There have been six recorded instances of assault on Hong Kong journalists in Mainland China over the past six years. None of the Mainland and Hong Kong authorities have acted on any of these incidents.
Now, the profession is witnessing an increase in violence which is absolutely unacceptable. The Hong Kong Journalists Association and the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association call on members of the press and the public to join their protest march to the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R. to demand a thorough investigation into the assault.
Details of the event are as follows:
Date: March 16 (SAT)
Time: 2:30 P.M.
Route: Western Police Station to the Liaison Office
