Here are the details from our meeting on Tuesday.  Thank you everyone for coming and participating.

Problems:
1.  Will not use Pedestrian Bridge (PB) because it is not safe due to crime
2.  Homeless problem on both sides
3.  Unsanitary
4.  Rats
5.  Camping
6.  DPW (many kudos to DPW for help) cleans and then the homeless are back.
7.  Wasted money cleaning up so many times a week.

Suggested Solutions:
1.  Parklet type garden
2.  Art installment
3.  Tear it down
4.  Put boulders on the Kimbell side
5.  Get rid of ramps

Discussion Outcomes:
1.  The city agencies and community needs to enforce rules and help with services.
2.  Call SFHOT (734- 4233) when the neighbors see people camping and passed out in the bathroom.  SF HOT (homeless outreach team) can dispatch people to help get the homeless services and possibly out of the bathrooms and from camping.
- Mr. Duffy of SF HOT will talk to the Methadone Clinic about patient policies and helping the clients not stay in the park and bathrooms.

3.  Call 311 or the Park Police at (what is the phone number again?) and request a CAD number with the police.  This is the reference number that we, the callers keep, to make sure that information is documented and noted.  WIth 311 ask for a service request number.
4.  Vallie will ask DPW for a study of the PB and cost for possible solutions.  Due to the possible Geary redesign the Steiner PB will most likely not be taken down in the near future.
5.  Callen and Noni will make a community flier informing the neighbors of who to call when we see issues in the park.
6.  We need to call as often as possible when we see something illegal or harmful in the park to disrupt patterns.

Please add anything I missed.
Again thank you for coming and helping with our park.

Next Park Volunteer Day :  JULY 20.
Park Manager Steve C is looking into getting us some hardy native plants to put in the planter so we can do other stuff besides weed the planter.

Thanks Callen Taylor

Callen,

Thanks for the good meeting last Tuesday. Re the planter at O'Farrell
and Pierce, the planter is under a very big attack from weeds. A few
of us have weeded the planter but Park heavier tools will make more
ground in a shorter period. A while back, a Park guy chewed out the
weeds with a machine. This can clear the way more efficiently and put
in native plants as Callen brought up.

Thanks, Leonard Anderson

Just a reminder....

Kimbell Park Volunteer Day on July 20- this Saturday 9-12.

Steve... could we get some hardy plants to put in the planter to keep the weeds at bay?  A gardener told us the ones at Jefferson Park are natives and would be a good fit.  That way we can transition from just weeding the planter.

Kimberly... could we have a sand sifter for the playground?

Any other ideas group?

Callen

A reminder for the Saturday July 20 at planter at OFarrell and Pierce. We need big equipment to clean out the planter.  Our planter is choking with weeds. No trowels, big equipment.

Steve, I would think more than six or so from earlier work at the planter box and nearby clean up, raking leaves, that sort of thing. Thanks,
Leonard.

Thank you Leonard. I completely agree.  This may be beyond the scope of a typical volunteer project at this point.  The biggest weed I see in the planter is one that is not going to go away without a complete renovation - elm tree root suckers. It appears that the Camperdown Elm tree was not a suitable choice for this planter as its root stock is now sending up dozens of root sprouts throughout the planter. These will continue to persist for the life of the planter. At this point, I need to clear the entire planter and start over. This would be easiest done with heavy equipment.

For this Saturday's event we are planning to venture into the meadow area to begin preparing for the upcoming construction renovation.  There is opportunity to build soils in the areas that are slated for larger renovation later this year. While there may not be immediate gratification, the impact of the coming workday will be long lasting and help the renovations thrive.
Do you know how many people we anticipate for Saturday?
