Hi,
Supervisors Breed and Mar are hosting a hearing to begin planning the filling of the Geary underpass between Webster and Steiner and the corresponding reunification of the Japantown and Western Addition/Fillmore communities.
Sorry for the late notice, but the hearing has now been scheduled as item 3 for Monday’s Land Use Committee meeting. There will be a variety of city departments there to discuss the project.
We would love to have your input on this important transportation/community/beautification project. If you can come to City Hall at 2:15pm on Monday 9/30, the hearing will be in committee room 263, directly across from my office.
Supervisor Breed believes this is an important project for the 38 Geary, for BRT, and for the future of Japantown and the Western Addition, but we need to marshal support. We hope you can come speak on Monday.
Could you please relay this to others in your neighborhood?
Here’s a few talking points;
· The Geary underpass is a legacy of the terrible impact the Redevelopment Agency had on JapanTown and the Western Addition
· It is not a natural feature. The underpass was dug in 1961 as on step towards a cross-town freeway on Geary.
· It was also a way to isolate the largely African-American Western Addition community from Pacific Heights & JapanTown
· And for 42 years the underpass the underpass has divided these communities
· Filling the underpass will improve pedestrian safety & make the Geary BRT Bus Rapid Transit) more efficient.
· And it will convert an eyesore into a beautiful boulevard & reunite the communities on either side
· This is not some hare brain idea. The community & the City (TA & MTA) have been discussing && planning this project for over a decade.
· Now it is time we implement the project.
Thank you,
Vallie
