Beginning of regular invasive plant removal events

Starting this Friday (June 12), the Friends group is beginning its first ongoing service project: biweekly events to remove invasive plants in the Nature Preserve. People who want to participate can come at 8:00 AM on the second and fourth Fridays of each month to remove invasive shrubs such as bush honeysuckle, privet, autumn olive, and multiflora rose. At appropriate times of the year, we may also remove herbaceous plants such as garlic mustard, teasel, and dame’s rocket.

Tools for removing shrubs will be available and no experience is necessary. Experienced participants can help newcomers recognize the target plants and demonstrate how to use appropriate tools to remove plants of various sizes.

It is also possible for individuals who want to work on the project to work independently. If you are interested in working on your own, please contact contact Dr. Jacob Buchanan for information about work locations and how to access the tools.

We will meet at the Moyer Nature Center in the Preserve at 8 AM. Hope to see you there!
