
Mary Draper Ingles made her escape from the Shawnee in 1755 and walked 800 miles from Big Bone to her home, Draper's Meadow, in Virginia by following the Ohio River. Join the Staff at Big Bone Lick State Historic Site and the Friends of Big Bone, as they share the story of the indomitable strength of this pioneer woman whose love of family sustained her while making this incredible journey.

10:00 AM:
Join Ossana Wolf, Park Interpreter, at the Visitor Center for a short walk and talk on the “Salt of Life.” Salt is an essential nutrient for humans and animals. Big Bone Lick has always been a place where animals and people have come to get salt, including the Shawnee and their captives like Mary Draper Ingles. From the time of the mastodons and mammoth during the last Ice Age to the end of the 19th century, salt has played a big role in the story of Big Bone Lick. During this program, we will explore salt the nutrient, how salt springs are formed and the history of salt at the Park in the last 300 years. This program will involve a short hike (0.5miles) along one of our trails and the chance to experience an active salt spring.

Join Eleanor Lahr, author of “Angels Along the River: Retracing the Escape Route of Mary Draper Ingles.” Hear how this physical journey became a transformative personal journey and a testament to the tenacity and spirit of ordinary people everywhere! Patty Hons, a direct descendant of Mary Ingles, and author of “Mary Draper Ingles: A True Story of Courage and Family” - a story for younger children, written in a way they would enjoy.
And a photo recount on how Matt Langford, sculptor of the Mary Ingles statue at the Boone County Library, captured the essence of Mary's journey – from clay to bronze.
2:30 PM:
Join the acclaimed author, James Alexander Thom, of the Best selling book, “Follow the River,” a novel based on the True Ordeal of Mary Draper Ingles. He will share his story of how he writes his stories! His Wife,Dark Rain, author and Shawnee, will also be there. Books will be available at the Gift Shop and from the authors, for signing!!
Then Enjoy the rest of the afternoon at the Park – be sure to stop in the Visitor Center to see the Amazing new display cases, that better show and tell the story of how important Big Bone Lick State Historic Site is!
Later that evening, join us for an outdoor picnic home concert and enjoy the music of “Salt of the Earth”, from St. Louis, whose song “Mary's Hope” honors Mary Ingles strength and love of family.
