Dear Officer Abdallah and Sergeant Nuzzi:

On behalf of Allston-Brighton bikes and the friends of BUbikes, thank you again for responding promptly to my telephone call yesterday requesting that BUPD ticket the illegally parked car that I encountered while riding outbound in the bicycle lanes on Commonwealth Avenue (on the way home from the Hub on Wheels event). As we discussed, vehicles parked illegally in the bicycle lanes on Commonwealth Avenue feed the current tensions between cyclists and motorists and may significantly increase the chance of serious bodily injury to cyclists attempting to travel in the bike lanes.

We understand that the bike lanes are new to Commonwealth Avenue, and that many cyclists and motorists may not understand that the lanes ARE bikes lanes and/or the best ways to co-exist and use them safely. However, we believe that these new bike lanes present an important opportunity to educate cyclists and motorists to improve safety and we truly appreciate the time you spent chatting with me about the lanes and other issues important to cyclists on and around your campus. As I mentioned, I feel that consistent and highly visible enforcement of the traffic and parking laws will not only increase safety but will go a long way toward improving the cycling community's perception of BU and its commitment to safety of cyclists.

As promised, I will pass along your requests and suggestions to the Mayor of Boston through Nicole Freedman at Boston Bikes and the Boston Bicyclist Advisory Board. In the meantime, I provide below links to some resources that are responsive to some of your requests. We also invite you and the BUPD leadership to join "friends of BUbikes" to stay in the loop of our discussions and efforts and to participate as appropriate.

Sincere thanks again and we look forward to continuing to work with you in the future,

--
