Hey all I have one quick question. I have been noticing a lot of people riding their bike with their helmet strapped to their bag instead of wearing it. Is this a new cool style that I missed?  I think I have seen it about 20 times in the past two months.  I know of 13 years that do it because their parents force them to have a helmet.  These people doing it can make their own decisions about if they want to have a helmet or not.  I can understand people not wearing a helmet because they don't have one.   I think it is stupid but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I have known a few people that have brain damage from bike accidents.  What I don't understand is, if you have a helmet, why would you not wear it?

I am sure that everybody on this list is against riding without a helmet.  I am not looking for what you think about wearing a helmet but if you have some insight to what is going through these people's minds.  Is there a way to do some sort of education to get people to start wearing a helmet.  My thought is that we need to reduce the cool factor of not wearing a helmet.  Especially with college students who are trying to find a niche to fit in.

cheers,
Bret

People do all sorts of crazy things. Maybe they're "just out for a short
ride" and planning on doing a long one later, so they have the helmet
along but don't want to mess with it just yet. Maybe they're on the way to
a meeting and are keeping their hair nice, but will wear it on the way
home. (Neither's a convincing argument to me, but they are reasons :) )

For those who need helmets and can't afford, I think HELL's still active:

Hell isn't active at the moment, the guy who was running it had to
finish his thesis or something like that, but with enough
encouragement and support perhaps we can latch on to what he got
started and keep it going. I'll mention it to the group, and on that
note we have a booth at the GSU link next week where we're taking
donations, selling t-shirts, and baked goods, and that money will go
towards BU Bikes and providing helmets at cheap/free cost for those
who want it. So if anyone talks to HELL, let them know we're in the
game too.

Yeah, both of the guys doing HELL needed to take a hiatus... I've got some connections for inexpensive ANSI-compliant helmets if you're interested... Chris D.

Once, when I was still helmet-shopping, a lady cop near the BU bridge
shouted at me "Where's your helmet, girl?" as I pedaled past. I said,
"I'm workin' on it!" and she said "You've got a lot of money invested
in that brain of yours!" which actually encouraged me to get a helmet
right away and really wear it. I do have a lot of money invested in
that brain of mine!
Could make a good slogan or something.
