Dear BUbikes and friends of BUbikes:
I'm happy to report that I just had an encouraging conversation with Joseph Mercurio, the Executive Vice President at Boston University. Mr. Mercurio told me that he and the senior administration at BU is committed to being more proactive to address bike safety issues. We agreed that the best approach at this time would be to create a working group that includes representatives of the BU administration as well as folks from the City of Boston and the student and broader cycling community.
I recommended to Mr. Mercurio that each of your organizations be invited to participate in the discussions, in addition to the Boston Police and BTD. Mr. Mercurio committed to follow-up with A-Bbikes within the next week to discuss next steps and how best to engage the BU administration and greater BU community in this collaborative process.
While he acknowledges the need for a comprehensive short and long-term planning process to address cycling issues, Mr. Mercurio's first priority at this time is to address immediate safety issues. In light of the cyclist accidents in the last week, we agreed that improving safety is absolutely the first priority to be addressed. I told him that A-Bbikes, Boston Bikes and MassBike (as well as other organizations) have resources that would likely be helpful and that we would all like to be involved in a collaborative approach to improve safety in and around the Comm. Ave. bike lanes and BU Campus.
Stay tuned for further developments coming soon and thanks for your interest in helping with the efforts to improve safety for cyclists in Allston-Brighton and around the BU campus,
Chris Ditunno
