UNI is not a high-rank school for consulting career if you would like to have a job in this field in the U.S, I suggest you at least studied at Ivy League or Chicago, Harvard and Wharton for sure. No school even in big twelve (including Vandelbilt, Indiana University, Ohio, .etc) is good to grasp a spot in this area of service, especially international students.
But if you want to become an auditor or accountant, the best way to stay in US because big 4 have Visa sponsorship program or Investment/portfolio management (not investment banking), going to UNI is a really good deal:
1. UNI is well known for CPA pass rate and accounting field, MBA students like me get interview at big 4 with easy. Career Services is good as they help you prepare for mock interviews, edit your interviews and explain how thing works here in the U.S
2. Cost of the program is low compared to other program. Especially if you have some research or data collection experience, you could get an Graduate Assistant job so easy here. Every GA position comes with half tuition waive, $960 salary monthly (enough for room, food and travel each semester to other states or cities in UN by airplane >:), sorry US is too big to walk or even automobile) and you enjoy in-state tuition fee => if you don't get scholarship for the rest of expenses, you should expect pay around 6000 more per year. So just get a GA because UNI receive 40 mil $ per year for research and even undergraduate students could get a GA, why can't we?
3. The timeline of program is flexible enough for you to complete it in 1 year but to my experience, I highly recommend you study for 2 years to better prepare yourself in term of cultural interaction, knowledge (CPA if possible) and figure out do you really want to live in the U.S
4. Open environment: students are encouraged to be involved in a lot of activities and clubs, even a 2 months graduate student like me could become a Senator for graduate college, representing for around 2000 students. But it might cost you a lot of time, for sure.
5. If your target is to stay in US, you don't need to do a lot of networking !!!! ( Sound weird ?) Definitely not! As I write above, auditor/accountant/porfolio management are the ONLY 3 possible job titles that nearly GUARANTEE you a visa-sponsored jobs here. You just need to study hard, know a lot about market, formulas, equations and software such as Excel, SPSS, SAS and you're good. Recruiters come to the school to look for you. Spend 3 days with Career Services and 1 day at job fair. That's all you need.
Of course, you could look for other jobs if you're lucky enough, there is no limitation or barrier here. But I am assure you that, it would take so much time and effort but resulting in zero just because we don't a working permit here.
In short, if you could DO want to leave in the U.S with Zero investment or low cost (around $6k/year) because your family wealth can't support you. Average starting salary of an auditor is around 50k per year but big 4 have to spend 15k to sponsor your visa. And you could get your Permanent resident status in 5-7 years, depending on other factors. After that, you're free to do what you want and as a matter of fact, employees from Big 4 are welcome everywhere , especially once you don't need visa sponsorship.
Cons: prepare to handle:
- Loneliness: there a few Vietnamese here, so I have to speaK English all days, even in my dream!!!
- Stress: I would like to get the most out of my 2 years here so I don't limit myself in every activity that lead to short of time and I am always busy with a lot of things. Because after you become a student, there are a lot of free stuffs and available facilities (swimming pool, fitness areas, computers, book, career advices, entrepreneurship program, free consultant, free advisable market research etc.) Might be I am so hungry to have them all
- Shopaholic: most of clothes, cosmetics, computers, digital stuffs are so cheap here compared to Vietnam. So everyday, you would want to spend a lot of money >:).
- Weather: it's quiet cold in Cedar Falls but I am getting used to that, and I don't think it's a problem if you buy cheap warm coats here (don't buy in Vietnam because they are half a price or a third here :v ). Or better if you get a drive license in Vietnam and just need to register for one here.
Thank you for your attention. I hope my experience could help you some days. Feel free to contact me for more information. And if you happen to be in the U.S like Mr. Ha now, please drop me an email or message, I love to speak Vietnamese A LOT!!!
