great ideas Shannon - notice many are also thanking grocery store workers who are also right on the front linewithout protection and making low wages'andra tutto bene'take care,BarbaraOn Mon, 23 Mar 2020 at 17:27, Shannon Greene <shannon...@yahoo.com> wrote:Hello Pendrith Neighbours,
I hope everyone is coping okay.I wanted to pitch an idea...As Sandy and I walked around the neighbourhood today to get some exercise, I noticed some uplifting messages. I took a couple photos to share. Rather than posting them on line, I thought I would put a request out to all of us to create a poster with an uplifting message of support. Support for people on their way to work or on their way to bring food or supplies to family. Yesterday I saw some people holding big posters thanking truck drivers as they passed by. A little gesture can go a long way. If you have kids, it might be something to do together.I will start working on one with my kids right now.If you have thoughts or ideas, shout them out!P.S. At 7:30pm tonight, there is a campaign to make some noise thanking healthcare workers for everything that they are doing to keep us healthy and safe. Let’s make some noise On our porches or out our windows tonight Pendrith!Take care,ShannonHi Neighbours!Bake sale today 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm! Please come enjoy a cookie, carrot muffin and/or hot chocolate. It’s a Fundraiser for the Toronto Humane Society and a Palmerston Grade 5 Social Studies initiative.

Following is the latest update on the St. Raymond School redevelopment. Included is contact information should you wish to speak for a revision to the plan that will prioritize the safety of those living, playing, and, going to school in this community. If you could please copy us on any e-mails that'd be great.
The current plan awaits final approval from the City and the Province. Once approved, construction is slated to start in late summer and last about 18 months with the school opening to students in January 2022.
Despite our efforts, the plan remains less safe than possible in at least two major ways.
The first is the use of the laneways for garbage trucks, delivery vehicles and staff accessing parking. This plan has garbage trucks and other vehicles crossing the Pendrith Lane sidewalk and travelling very close to the townhouses' front doors. Safety of children and other pedestrians using this sidewalk has always been our major concern, whether those pedestrians are travelling to the park, Christie Station, Bloor Street, the three schools on Essex, or, exiting/entering their homes. (The planned route for trucks described below.)
The second failure of the plan is that there are no safety provisions for pedestrians, cyclists, and, drivers where student drop-offs occur. The plan has buses and other vehicles dropping-off via a cut-out on Barton in front of the school. The point at which Pendrith Lane meets Barton is already unsafe as the jog in the road to the east of the lane impedes visibility, the increased traffic from the increased traffic will only make it more dangerous. This unsafe situation sets a precedent in conflict with the City’s stated policy to encourage the building of laneway housing thus increasing densification along laneways in the downtown core.At a time when pedestrian deaths are on the rise and in the news, it’s bewildering that the City would approve vehicle usage and parking and bus drop- off/pick-up so close to residents’ homes and pedestrian through-ways. To date, we have been unable to locate a single example where similar plans have been permitted in Toronto.
Over 18 months’ worth of correspondence, a petition which you signed, and attendance by several neighbours at the one community meeting have not affected as much change as we might have wished. That one meeting was held in December 2019, shortly before Christmas and three years after the school project was known to public officials. It was not attended by even one City planning staff so they did not hear our input.
We are disappointed that the pledge from TCDSB staff, and elected trustee Norm Di Pasquale, that the TCDSB wouldn’t submit a plan that “didn’t work for the community” were not upheld – while at the same time spending $120,000 to construct a chimney to ensure the safety of birds. If only the same safety commitments could be made to our human residents!
If you have objections or suggestions regarding the proposed plan we suggest you make contact directly with City officials, we urge you to request that:1. the safety of the community be prioritized by re-routing parking and trucks out of laneways where people live and walk2. that additional safety measures be implemented to ensure safe pedestrian passage along both sections of the Pendrith Lane sidewalk to Christie Pits and points beyond (particularly at the points where Pendrith Lane exits onto Barton and where it meets St. Raymond Heights).Thank you and all the best to you and your families in 2020.Best regards,Barbara MacGibbon, Alison Loat, Shami Beelynda.m...@toronto.ca (Director, Community Planning, Toronto and East York District)sipo.ma...@toronto.ca (Senior Planner, Midtown Section)
Planned route for garbage trucks, delivery and other vehicles:Trucks are slated to travel north up the laneway on the school’s west side, turn east onto St. Raymond Heights, enter the school property across from the townhouses, exit back onto that lane, turn north onto Pendrith Lane and exit onto Pendrith Street. Service and staff vehicles are free to enter along the same route as the garbage trucks, or via Pendrith Lane on the east side of the property.Logic would favour having vehicles travel straight up the western lane, enter the school grounds for garbage pick-up or parking, then exit back onto the western lane to exit onto Pendrith Street, vehicles would travel in a straight line, not turning across a sidewalk. An alternate suggestion would have vehicles continue to access the site via Barton as has been done historically.
