Hi Lisa, The programme is about detoxing and not depending on any drugs for your well being, with exceptions once discussed with the monastery like insulin etc. Or heart medication, drugs that you need to physically survived. Anti depressants if you research them are supposed to be a short term intervention until you find a way to deal with your anxiety levels. Of course if you are addicted to other drugs then you have not achieved this but your anti anti depressant dependency is part of your addiction. I know this because they are the very drug I detoxed from when I went there. I was addicted to Valium, sleeping tablets also. I had given up cocaine months before my arrival at Thamkrabok. I am not sure what other tablets you are addicted to, but it is important to note, that tablets like valium have an extremely hard withdrawal, even if they are prescribe.

My personal advise is to reduce everything now, right this minute, slowly cut your dosage over a period of time. Any prescribed drugs get your doctor to put you through a reduced programme. Your anxiety is the problem that if not solved will only hinder your recovery and be a trigger for your other addictions. You need to seek help in this area. Fast. I am not sure what country you are from but a councelling service may be available to you. Cognitive therapy is excellent to help you with anxiety. When you have this sorted or started, this would then be a good time to then complete Thamkrabok and have the sessions of therapy to come home to for support. You will not be allowed take anti depressants in the monastery. They are a mind altering drug which defeats the point. I really do empathise with you as I stress I have been there myself. The drugs are not the problem as a wise monk phra Hans said, they are telling you, that you have a problem, that problem needs to be solved. The drug is disguising the problem. It clearly has reached a point where the drug is no longer enough and your life is suffering. Something inside you is asking for help. Staying on anti depressants as a cure will not work because they do not cure. They just sometimes numb the bad feelings, which are still there, but numbing the bad feelings included numbing the good feelings and full joy and happiness will not be felt either.

So to summarize, congratulations on wanting to change and improve, if you are going to succeed long term, do it completely, work on the cause not the symptoms. Definitely get doctors advise on reduction of prescribed tablets and ask for support with therapy or groups sessions. Even if counselling is not available there is loads on the web about cognitive therapy, and books and when reduced to a safe dose you can experience Thamkrabok the way you should, you wont be experiencing it or benefiting from a complete detox with numbing drugs in you. You need to feel raw and get to know yourself and accept yourself. Contact the monastery and ask them about meditating and that alone can be your anti depressant. You could research meditation from now and get a head start of the basics. It will be a hard road and a tough one, but if it was easy you would not have started on drugs in the first place. They now are adding to your burden. I know you would feel great to be able to go anywhere and not worry whether you packed your tablets or not. Your anxiety is now including whether you have your pills with you. You need to be a free spirit and depend on your own natural chemicals and emotions to work properly, they are not at the moment and will take a bit of time to kick in after being made redundant. Its all or nothing and take it from someone who choose to give it all up. It was so worth it and I would never go back to that life again where half the panic was "oh I am out of pills".

You will be fine, your biggest problem now is the worry of not being fine. That is just a worry and not reality.

warmest wishes. keep going and take the next step.

Audrey
