A void has develop in my soul with the passing of my brother. I recall many a times as we were growing up, Rex was there to protect me, but never over shadowing, for that was the kind of person he is. In one of my visits to Japan, Rex packed me on his motorcycle. We spent the entire day riding around Biwako. During the journey, we hit a stretch of black ice. As we were sliding down the road, Rex looked up at me to make sure I was fine.
As a teenager, Rex ran track. He was pretty fast, placing in the State. While attending college, he told me he was going to run the Honolulu Marathon. I had no doubt he'll do it, and do it fast. He trained hard, running each. On the day of the race, he got up early; you could tell he was excited. At the end of the day, he came home and told me, in a matter of fact, his time. It wasn't as fast as I thought he was capable of doing. I shrugged it off; Rex you see was a sprinter, but he quietly went on his business. The next day, Mom showed me a newspaper article about Rex helping a blind runner finish the marathon. Turns out the blind runner's partner experienced some problems early in the marathon, so the blind runner thought he could finish the race on his own. Rex later told me that he saw the blind runner having problems, so he decided to run with him; ergo, his slower than expected time. Mom and I were so proud of him. He never said a word about this; never cast blame about his time; nor express regret of an opportunity lost. You see, that's the kind of guy he is.
I miss my brother. I am optimistic that my void will be filled with fond memories.
Thank you all for sharing your lives with Rex. In this way, he will live forever.
Ross
