Hi FoMP,

We need to just finalize our plans for the DuWest Fest since we'll be
in a zone with the rest of the neighbourhood groups.

I need some urgent feedback. Is our presence one or both of the following:

1. Information booth - table and chairs with playground panels
and/or master plan.

2. Sandbox idea - we have a donation of up to a truckload of sand but
the only thing that we'll have to cover are the timber edges, the
filter fabric, and the equipment and volunteer muscle/ labour to
remove the sand (or we just wheelbarrow it to St. Clarens Parkette/
Shirley Street School/ McCormick Park - this would have to happen at
the end of the Fest and before 11pm; anyone have a small bobcat?)

OR any other creative ideas welcome! Is this our opportunity to do
some fundraising? Bake Sale? Sell vintage McCormick Park t-shirts?
Outdoor Yoga Class? Parcours class (I can get a Parcours instructor
maybe)? Maybe I can try to get a patch of artificial turf donated and
lay it out in front of our table and have a bocce game.....

I need to get back to the organizer asap.

Thanks!
Fung

Hello, Just touching base again about this year's Dundas West Fest,
scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2014

We will be having two zones again, same locations.

In addition, we are also adding a performance area for kids & youth, by kids
& youth, close to St Clarens. We may also have to move the soccer zone. And
the local Brockton residents association also wants to add a sandbox
somewhere along the perimeter (in addition to the popular sand area
activities in the parkette). Not to mention all of the individual
family-friendly activities that some of our members may organize them selves
on the sidewalks in front of their shops. And we are hoping that Chalk the
Block comes back...

Last year's festival went very well but there are always lessons to be
learned. Getting everyone together for a meeting may be tricky, so I'd like
to invite you all to tell me (either by replying to all, or privately):

- what went well last year

- what didn't go well / areas for improvement

- if, & what, you are planning for this year

I'd love to have you all involved again and want to make sure that you have
enough time to talk to your respective councils/boards etc. in the lead-up
to this year's event. If your school has a choir, please submit them for a
slot in the performance area.

Just an FYI: as with last year, we will be posting to social media
everything that we know will be happening, so the earlier you can tell me,
the more chances you will have to get promoted.

Thanks again for all of your great work last year!

Hey Fung.
Sorry I've been out of the loop. Returning home on Friday after a few months of backpacking around Costa Rica.
I will be back in action and will jump back into the FOMP work.

When is duwest fest? I'm happy to bake a few favourites and sell them at the table.

Also, I will begin researching building vs. buying the Little Free Library when I return. I think as I did raise the funds for it, I might like to just buy the LFL model which means it would already be registered with the larger LFL program. Easier for all, and we would have it installed by the end of May.

Talk soon,

Lindsay

Not sure that we can sell food at the fest if we aren't licensed, anyone know about this?

I'm happy to provide muscle and investigate tshirts.

I will inquire with Helder of the BIA. I'm not sure if they get a
festival-wide permit OR if each individual business/ organization has
to get their own permit. Will let you know. It would be great to have
some snacks, esp. if we're in the Kids' Zones!

For a fairly large sandbox (3x6m and 30cm deep) we'll probably need
about 6-8 people to get rid of the sand and 3-4 wheelbarrows. There
was some reservation about it at the last meeting - which is totally
fair - so we can only do it if we have some committed muscles! OR - we
can make it a small sandbox (half-size - 3x3m), if it's worth it, then
we'll just need 4-6 people? OR I can see if any parents from Shirley
Street School want to bring the sand to use at the school somewhere -
stockpile it for the upcoming Kindergarten renos - I know for a fact
that they are going to get a new sandbox.....? Hmmmmmm.....then the
removal can be done by them (which is still me). I'll discuss it
casually with the co-chairs....unless we are adamant the sand should
go to FOMP.

We can borrow some easels from my office - they are collapsible and
easier to transport.

I vote for a small sandbox, and yes to asking around for people who want sand.

I'm a yes for the t-shirts if we have time to get something good put together. I think it is a good idea to do some kind of fundraising if we can although I agree with Joe on the bake sale front. I also agree that the sandbox is a lot of work. It is a fun idea to give kids something to play with, if there is enough sand to keep them engaged for a bit of time but I don't really see the point. That sounds negative, but it is a lot of work without much return..?...although it would make people stop and take a closer look at any info we are putting up. Tough call.
I can help out on a specific schedule. Don't have a wheelbarrow or bobcat but I do have muscles :)

Hey thanks all for the feedback.

I'm starting to think the same as Karen re: sandbox. Maybe not much return for all the labour.

I totally agree with fundraising aspect: whether it's a bake sale or t-shirts or both.

Unless anyone objects, can I get back to the coordinator and say that spatially we'll just have a booth with some easels for the panels (hopefully won't be too windy). We can figure out the other details later, but she just needs to know enough to site us accordingly within the Kids Zone. Maybe closer to Brock so we can actually orient people to our park.

Let's make sure this is on the agenda for the next meeting, so we can solicit volunteers to be at the booth.

I liked where we were last year, right at Brock. It’s as close to the park as we can get.
Thanks again Fung!

I agree with doing it at Brock same as last year. Joe and myself
enjoyed the early shift :)

Thank you Fung!

Okay friends,

I bumped into Alison and Helder (the DuWest Fest coordinators) this
morning and I am going to recommend we skip the sandbox because the
only site they can allow us to do it is very directly in front of St.
Clarens parkette within the Kids' Zone, which is not as useful for us
to promote FOMP, and the effort is just too great to do it ourselves
at the end of the night (of potential debauchery).

So I am going to get back to Helder and Alison, the coordinators, to
see if they can put a booth for us close to Brock, similar to where
they had us last year. He suggested we set-up a tent (for rain day)
and ensure we secure the panels and the easels from blowing away.

Having a bake sale will involve individually wrapping the items,
wearing gloves when handling, and a hand-washing station nearby (which
could be my house on Dundas), and keeping the goods covered. We don't
have to decide that now, it's just fyi.

Thanks all for your input.

Fung
