If
you could pay $5 for a home-cooked meal to be eaten with 20-50 of your
closest friends and neighbors, how often would you do it?
Every
cohousing community has a common house. The common house supplements the
individual residents' homes and provides a place for community
activities. It's the heart of cohousing community. It's a place for
common dinners, afternoon tea, children's games on rainy days, crafts
workshops, silent meditation in a prayer area, and numerous other
organized and informal activities.
Most cohousing communities
share meals in the common house several days per week. If there are
enough people in the community, it is possible that just once a month a
small group will take turns cooking a meal for the entire community, and
then enjoy a meal prepared by other residents for the rest of the
month.
Who could benefit from breaking bread with good company a
few days a week? Single people tired of eating on the run? Single
parents that need a break? Couples with children who are thirsty for
adult conversation? Older couples desiring to reconnect with community?
