| next Sunday, May 18, 4 PM It's time for our Annual Seal Watch. Let's get out on the water! Next Sunday afternoon, May 18, we'll board the Black Hawk and travel out to Little Gull Island & beyond to try and find some seals! Sign up HERE today! Local seals are actually Maine natives who make Long Island Sound their winter/spring and sometimes permanent home. On this trip, we'll leave from Niantic and head out west to Little Gull, Great Gull, and Plum Islands -- and hopefully find some seals. Bring your camera and binoculars. We'll bring a drink and snack! The boat leaves at 4, so plan to arrive by 3:30 PM. It's about a 2 hour+ round-trip. |

This week at the Custom House |
|
Last week, Joseph and Barbara Dlubac brought some amazing artifacts to the Custom House. Joseph Dlubac worked at the Sound Laboratory (& subsequent titles: NVSC, NVWC ...) for 50 years. Beginning as a Junior Sonic Engineer in 1961, he retired as the Chief Engineer to the Department Head and, periodically, the Technical Director. Joe started at Fort Trumbull in New London until transferring to Newport in 1995 for the remainder of his career. From 1979 to 1981 he was the Science Advisor at COMSUBPAC (Commander Submarine Force Pacific) in Pearl Harbor. When he retired Joe was presented with the dB, or Decibel Award. The award, (photo below, 1/10 of a bell -- a play on decibel), is presented to a distinguished scientist, engineer, or naval officer who achieved distinction in the field of sonar or underwater acoustics, recognizing an individual whose contributions have resulted in extraordinary gains in knowledge applicable to the needs of the U.S. Navy in underwater acoustics. |

Not surprisingly, Joe has been fascinated by submarines and collected largely WWII submarine material -- everything from EB launch figures and badges to posters and photographs. This week he donated his artifacts along with a large collection of books to us -- and we are so grateful. This donation fills a major gap in our local maritime history collection. Thank you! It looks like we'll start working at Ledge Light next weekend. We're looking for volunteers to help get Ledge Lighthouse ready for summer. We've got cleaning and painting to do. Want to help? Email your contact information and we'll notify you as soon as we have firm dates! --Susan |

Custom House Community CaseWhat would you put in a museum? Our Community Cases offer local groups/individuals an opportunity to showcase collections that are important to them. We are keen to support local people to share their research on local topics, archives and artifacts. The Community Case will be open to the public whenever the Custom House is open and new displays will be installed every 2-3 months, as available. Please email your idea for a display to: nlmaritim...@gmail.com. |

Tuesday May 20, 1:30 PM JIBBOOM Club #1 See you on May 20 when Capt. Pat Kennedy is our Jibboom guest. Pat has spent his life on the water. New London Harbor's go-to guy -- he lays boom, transports crews, guides ships, salvages boats, helps the currach rowers and local Sea Scouts, and occasionally runs NLMS workers out to Race Rock, (photo, above, from 2019: Pat is 2nd from left; Donna Owen)! Pat will tell us what life on the New London waterfront is like. Jibboom is not a 'club', but a friendly gathering. Please come and bring a friend.
