This Thursday, December 18th at 10am, the Rec and Park Commission will hear New Business/Agenda Setting on the "Beacon Street Hill Trail". Currently, this land is considered part of Walter Haas Park.
If Friends of Billy Goat Hill want to request the Commission to consider moving this land into the BGH natural area, this meeting might be a good time to start this conversation with the commission.
As is, Friends of Walter Haas will be responsible for coordinating volunteer and community efforts for this trail. The concern is the trail area may not be a priority given the dog park and playground demands.
I don't believe the trail land area has any significant native plants currently but it is a connective greenbelt and could be developed with native ferns, bushes and flowers suited to the more wooded environment.
The commission meeting is held in room 416 (fourth floor) of city hall. All public speakers are welcome to speak for up to two minutes.

Thanks, Lisa. That's useful information. The trail is definitely culturally related to Billygoat Hill rather than the park on top.

 Happy holidays!

Lisa,
Thank you.  You've broadened my perspective about the wooded hillside.
I can't make it to the meeting on Thursday.  Please pass on any pertinent comments and/or Commission action, OK?  I'd appreciate it.  Take care.
Fred

I am available to attend and voice this issue (and others) but I only want to go if there is consensus that we want this to happen. I personally don't have a strong interest in this but I can understand how this will affect those closer to the park borders

Thanks, Lisa.

Lita and I live directly across from BGH on Beacon St. and think it would be moh bettah if the city-owned land next door to Fred's house and Jane and Bill's house to be were part of the BGH Natural Area rather than the WH Playground above it.

Lita remarked that having a city-supported rustic path in that open space will preserve it from ever being sold off and developed if the City finds itself in desperate financial straits in the future and needs to sell off assets to fund the defined benefit pension plans entitled to City employees.

Lisa,

I will try to attend but it will depend on my ability to get out of work that day.

I think what you are suggesting is indeed in our collective interests.  I very much appreciate you raising the idea.

THANK YOU.

Hope to see you there.

All,

I showed up to the hearing this morning, but it turns out this item was not on the agenda for today.

Lisa – is there an easy way to find out when it will be?

Thanks!

David

The agenda is posted online and this is on the agenda - I'm watching the meeting now on TV as I couldn't make it .

Hmm.  Cannot get it to show online. L  And I cannot find a site that lists the agenda. L L

In any case, as I recall, indeed there was a mention of the Beacon Street Trail in the new business section (as you suggest below) – one item among about 10, but I had maybe an hour to spend there and when I left at 10:30am they had not even gotten past Item 1. J Sigh.

Thanks so much regardless for bringing this to our attention.  It is unfortunate that that civil process requires one to give up a half-day of work just to ask that something be considered by the commission.  Wish there was an easier way.

Traffic through the narrow 1-lane passage on Miguel St. between Beacon and Bemis keeps getting worse and worse as more and more people use it as part of a shortcut from upper market to the Mission and the freeway, particularly during rush hours in the morning and evening.  Last night at around 6 o'clock I was stuck there for a few minutes during a standoff between four cars coming up hill and four cars going downhill.
It must be miserable for people who live on that block who need to get in and out of their garages during those times. I wonder what can be done to improve the situation? Would making Miguel one way going up or down help? If not, what else could be done to route traffic away from that street? Anyone have any ideas?  It might be best to start having a discussion about this now because anything we come up with as a neighborhood group will probably take about five years for the city to even consider.

Happy holidays to all neighbors and friends!

I can't speak for my neighbors, but I personally would favor making Miguel Street a one-way street. I think it would solve the thoroughfare problem you noted.

Do you think it would be better for the one-way to be uphill towards Beacon or downhill towards Bemis?

I would favor Miguel as a one-way street uphill from Bemis to Beacon.  Drivers go faster down-hill at both the north end of Beacon Street  and the north end of Miguel.  As a result, both streets would experience less traffic throughout the day and especially during the afternoon commute. It would also prevent those inevitable traffic snarls on Miguel.  Thanks to all for considering this suggestion as a possible solution to our traffic problem.
In the meantime, have a Merry (and safe) Christmas!

Thanks, Fred. That makes a lot of sense. I wonder what would be more convenient for you folks who live on Miguel Street one way uphill or one way downhill?

I agree that uphill one-way would be the best way to control speed and flow.
