Dear Atlanta Park Pledge Signers:

The Mayor's Office is in the process of sending the proposed fiscal 2008 budget to the Atlanta City Council, and Atlanta's parks are going to need your support.  While we don't know what is in the budget, the first public hearing will be at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 10, at the Atlanta Civic Center.  A second one will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 17, at City Council Chambers.  Council plans to vote on the final budget on Monday, June 4, during it's normal meeting (starts at 1:00).  Park Pride needs you to show up.

I am asking that you spend an hour at either public hearing or the Council vote.   Park Pride will provide all park supporters a green Park Pride T shirt to wear as a show of support at the meetings and take home as a souvenir.  Due to the short time frame, please let me know as soon as possible if you (or you and a friend) can help Atlanta's park system and the quality of life for her residents by attending a meeting.

I wish that I could provide more information about the budget, and I will when it becomes available.  However, I do know that Atlanta's parks and recreation budget fell from $44 million in 1976 to $26 million in 2004.  Staff was cut from nearly 900 to fewer than 300.  While park and recreation support has increased in the past three years, there is still a lot of work to be done.

The first public hearing is less than a week away, and this is an extremely difficult budget year for most cities, including Atlanta, because changes to federal law have created huge pension liabilities.  In such a climate, Atlanta's parks need your help.

I hope that you will be able to lend your voice to improve public health, protect the environment, strengthen social ties, build communities, spur economic development and reduce crime.  Please respond to this e-mail and let me know whether you will be able to attend one or more of these important meetings to support Atlanta's parks.
