Bob,
I was not around back then. I cannot imagine that today's proposed change to rotunda would include a way for people to get in free other than during the designated times.

I am also finding it hard to believe that if staffed properly the rotunda entrance would be more of a bottle neck than the present entrance. Like I stated earlier my best guess for the reason was predicated on the notion that the side entrance would allow BSP staff to have only one person collecting money. That might still be a valid argument for cost reasons but considering the increased amount of people that are using the pool today vs. back then and the amount of money that is collected one could argue that an increase in staff during peak time is justified and a worthwhile investment.

My other point with the change to the rotunda entrance is that like now they typically add another person at the entrance during peak times that sits just inside to check that everyone entering has a pass, paid for a ticket or has there hand stamped. These folks have to squeeze there way by the line of folks that are waiting to pay to get in. With the change to the rotunda entrance there would ample room for everyone to enter without getting in the way of folks waiting to buy a ticket and there also would be an option for staff to open another booth for paying customers during peak hours. I do not have any data but I would venture to guess that there are some people that when confronted with the long line either leave or attempt to enter from the south side, I know that I have on several occasions.

Finally with regards to anyone having any insight to why the move was made I would encourage anyone that was around that might have a memory of that time to please speak up. The more we know about how and why this move was made the better informed we will be.

Respectfully,
Steve

Moreover, one could apparently get in free by just going around the
corner (to the current entrance area.

Steve,

I think her impression was that the bottleneck and the "free entrance" problem could be solved by one move.
