Was only given 2-3 minutes for a Welcome. It went like this:
“Welcome to Grandparents Day at GCA. You honor our school by your presence here today
and you honor these loved ones you came to see.
“I want to make an observation and open us in prayer.
“The observation is this: Never. Ever. Underestimate the power and influence you have in your grandchildren’s lives.
“God didn’t put us on this earth ONLY to spoil our grandchildren. Oh, we do, of course. When our first daughter was born, my wife cross-stitched a piece for my Mom: “When Mother says ‘No’. . .ask Grandmother.” (That got a good laugh.)
“We’re here to be a spiritual influence on our grandchildren. . .and to pray.
“I was not a Christian in my early years. . .
although I went to church all my life. In my teenage years. . .through four years of college,
my life was at a very dark place.
BUT
“I had TWO praying grandmothers!”
“Anne Lamott says that when (grandparents)
are praying for you. . .buckle up!”
“Pretty sure those two grandmothers prayed me into the Kingdom. I became a Christian in Graduate School. Jesus showed up around 4:00 a.m. in a small rented room in a little lady’s house off-campus. . .all because of two praying grandmothers!
“There is a saying: ‘The gates of Hell shall not prevail against the prayers of praying Grandmothers.’”
“So, spoil your grandkids, of course. . .but pray, pray, pray for them as well.”
“Please pray with me. . .”
So, there ya have it. . .
Much love,
R
