An opera friend of mine, who also sings in the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, posted on Facebook that he had just participated in a memorial service for Peter Neumann. Apparently Peter had come through with a significant donation to help the chorus when things were looking dire.
He apparently didn't like to take credit for his support. Here's a prayer that my friend forwarded that I suspect was printed in the memorial service program.
Peter's Prayer, written for him by his mother because he asked for her to (at age 7) DEAR GOD. LET ME KNOW DEEP IN MY HEART WHAT IS RIGHT AND WHAT IS WRONG. LET NO ONE DISCOURAGE ME. INSPIRE ME IN MY WORK, AND IF MY WORK IS GOOD, LET THIS BE MY REWARD. LET ME NOT LOOK FOR PRAISE. TEACH ME TO TAKE CARE OF THE GOOD BODY YOU HAVE GIVEN ME, AND OUT OF THIS GOOD BODY LET MY SPIRIT GROW. HELP ME FIND FRIENDS WITH GENEROUS HEARTS, AND TO THEM LET ME BE LOYAL. LET ME LOVE THE SUN AND THE EARTH AND THE SEA, AND TO MY GROWING SOUL LET ME FOREVER LISTEN. AMEN
