Abstract: 
For decades, researchers have analyzed reconstructed network flows and application sessions to understand Internet security, privacy, censorship, and resilience. Yet, despite many proposed traffic analysis tools, the security research community continues to build custom, one-off systems over low-level packet processing libraries to conduct experiments.
We investigate the needs of modern passive traffic analysis, and we introduce Iris: a framework for efficiently developing complex, high-performance traffic analysis pipelines. Iris addresses traditional tradeoffs between flexibility and performance by compiling an optimized processing pipeline from user-defined filters, stream transformations, and computations written in Rust. We demonstrate that Iris can execute real-world security and privacy experiments concurrently at 100Gbps+ on a single commodity server.

Bio:
Thea Rossman is a second-year PhD student at Stanford advised by Zakir Durumeric in the Empirical Security Research Group. She is broadly interested in building practical systems that help researchers, operators, and end-users understand, in order to strengthen, modern networks.
