1. Sow & Grow: SGA has released its new curriculum, specifically meant to teach students in the garden.

Sow and Grow uses the local environment as a focal point for learning. Place-based education creates a meaningful and culturally relevant framework for learning. By connecting Common Core concept areas and units of study in their classrooms to gardens and local communities, students have a real-world context for learning. Place-based education opportunities are plentiful in the Sow and Grow curriculum.

Whether wishing to start a school or community garden or seeking to better utilize an existing garden space as part of a classroom, this curriculum provides a range of information and activities to help at every stage of garden education.

2. Fresh from the Farm is hosting another round of training in Chicago, IL:
  • Thursday, May 22: Curriculum Night
  • Wednesday, May 28: Gardening at Waters
Stay tuned for more details!

These grants support children, families, and communities by increasing the number of children born at a healthy birth weight and who receive the care and healthy food they need for optimal development.

4. State Farm® Youth Advisory Board (YAB) service-learning grant applications are available now until May 2.  The grants range from $25,000 - $100,000 and are designed to create sustainable change in local communities across the United States.  Public K-12, charter, higher education institutions, and non-profit organizations are eligible if they are able to demonstrate how they plan to impact student achievement within the public K-12 curriculum.  All applicants must have a youth contact and adult administrator, as the programs must be youth-driven and youth-led.

Each grant request must fall under one of these issue areas, chosen by the board itself:
  • Community Safety
  • Environmental Responsibility
  • Financial Literacy
  • Access to Higher Education
  • Health and Wellness
  • Arts and Culture
As of August 2013, seven years after the initial launch of the YAB, the board has awarded more than $28.6 million in grants to organizations in the U.S. and Canada and impacted approximately 16.1 million lives.
