New online Sustainable Agriculture courses at Triton College starting week of Jan. 21

All Online Sustainable Agriculture Technology (SAT) courses at Triton College are being offered with IN-DISTRICT TUITION, regardless of your home address!  In-District Tuition is $103 per credit hour, so a 3 credit course would cost $309 plus a $25 online course fee for a total cost of $334.   These courses are great for the working professional to complete on your own time. 
 
All of the courses for the certificate programs in Sustainable Agroecology (16 credits TOTAL) and Sustainable Food Production (13 credits TOTAL) are offered online.   Please call the Triton College admissions office at 708-456-0300, ext. 3130 to get registered for courses starting January 21 or register for SAT courses online at http://coursecatalog.triton.edu/Pages/SectionsResults.aspx?k=SAT
     
 
New certificate and degree programs in Sustainable Agriculture Technology AAS (SAT), Sustainable Landscape Practices AAS, Sustainable Agroecology Certificate, Sustainable Food Production Certificate were recently approved by the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) at Triton College in River Grove, IL.  Most of the courses are hybrid or completely online for working professionals to complete on your own time.    
 
The new courses were designed by highly qualified faculty teaching/working in the Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Landscaping field throughout Chicagoland.  The Department of Labor provided funding to develop these innovative new courses and purchase equipment for aquaponics, hydroponics, composting, green roof installation, living walls, greenhouse updates, permeable pavers, and much more for student use in the Triton College Horticulture Department. 
 
This Spring the Triton College Horticulture Department will be offering these five new Sustainable Agriculture Technology (SAT) courses starting the week of January 21:
 
SAT 100 Principles of Agroecology- 3 credits

Focus on scientific, social and sustainable principles of agroecology and food production with a discussion on the political, economic, social and environmental aspects of various food systems.

SAT 105 Urban Agricultural Issues- 3 credits

Introduction to the agricultural issues associated with urban living and ways to enhance the production and availability and deliverability of fresh foods within large cities. Also, organic food production, including hydroponics, urban farming and aquaponic gardening as alternatives to traditional rural farming and distribution.

SAT 110 Natural Resource Management-3 credits 

Contemporary practices of natural resource management, including issues in soil and water conservation, sustainable practices relevant to urban and rural areas, appropriate plant selection and environmental issues, and management practices that have an adverse effect on the environment and the solutions to such situations.

SAT 170 Introduction to Biotechnology- 3 credits

History, methods and applications of biotechnology. An overview of the molecular and genetic principles and processes fundamental to biotechnology. Forensic, medical, agricultural and environmental applications of biotechnology.

SAT 220 Designing Food Production Systems in Urban Landscapes- 1 creditLANDSCAPES

Emphasizes urban landscape design solutions to overcome barriers to providing local fresh food resources in an urban setting. Also crop and livestock selection and various community programs that address the nutritional needs in urban areas.
