2) Grants for School Districts interested in Universal School Breakfast and Alternative Breakfast Models
Districts will receive $1,260 per school, with total funding ranging from $12,600 to $25,200, depending on the number of schools included in the grant (10-20 primary and secondary schools will be funded within each district). In addition, districts and schools will receive significant in-kind contributions from Action for Healthy Kids in the form of people, programs and policy expertise.
Because childhood obesity and undernourishment—and their effects on health and learning—are most severe within low-socioeconomic status urban, rural and suburban communities, theAction for Healthy Kids-Kellogg’s School Breakfast to School Wellness Partnership will give priority to districts where a majority of schools have 50% eligibility for free and reduced-price meals and average enrollment of 500 students per school. Action for Healthy Kids will provide management, expertise and support to develop an alternative breakfast program, start a universal breakfast program, or expand a pilot universal breakfast program to more schools within the district. These strategies have been shown to have the greatest impact on increasing in school breakfast participation.
Interested districts must submit a Letter of Intent by 5pm ET on Friday, June 21, 2013. A final application is due by 5 p.m. ET on Friday, August 23, 2013. Click here for more details and to apply. If you have any additional questions, please contact Ellen Dillon, Action for Healthy Kids Breakfast Grant Manager, at 410-707-9038 or edi...@actionforhealthykids.org.
