Happy Holidays, FFF Educators!

As we close out the year 2014, there is a lot to look ahead for on the horizon. Once the holidays are past, we will start planning our spring gardens and get ready to bring fresh greens, peas and fruits into our school cafeterias. Here at Seven Generations Ahead, we are looking forward to growing in our new role as state lead organization for Farm to School. If you are interested in being part of our statewide coalition, watch this space! If you need assistance with your farm to school program for Spring 2015, get in touch with Lydia Mills at ly...@sevengenerationsahead.org.

1. Midwest Farm to School Grant Successes
On December 2nd, the USDA announced the list of organizations and universities that were granted a total of more than $5 million for farm to school activities and for growing the capacity of regional networks. The money given to organizations in the Midwest/Great Lakes Region totaled over $1 million. Money in our region will go to increasing local food procurement in schools, building season extension equipment in urban areas, increasing marketing of locally grown foods and increasing technical assistance on farms that will preserve the harvest for more of the year. This funding will create powerful projects and help grow the sustainability of our movement. There was more demand than the funding could provide, and we need to continue our efforts to increase opportunities for Farm to School work in the midwest.

For a list of all 2015 USDA farm to school grantees, go here: http://www.fns.usda.gov/sites/default/files/f2s/FY_2015_Grant_Award_Summaries.pdf Congratulations to all recipients!

2. Illinois Food Scrap Coalition
The Illinois Food Scrap Coalition's full report will be published in January. Are you interested in learning more about composting in your part of the state? There has been a major statewide effort to make food scrap composting easier and more affordable for individuals and institutions such as schools. If your school is interested in assistance setting up a cafeteria food scrap collection and composting program, get in touch with Jen at Seven Generations Ahead: jenn...@sevengenerationsahead.org.

3. Real Food Media Contest
This contest is the project of the Real Food Media Project, a collaborative initiative using online movies and a web-based action center along with grassroots events around the country to spread the stories of sustainable food and farming. We are especially excited to partner with School Ambassadors who are helping us connect with students who may be interested in participating in the Contest. Ambassadors are also welcome to screen the winning films on campus at the end of the Contest. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador, please email us. New this year we are giving cash prizes for student films and underreported issues. Winning films also get a ton of exposure through our distribution networks and Pop-Up Film Festivals (now happening around the world!). In addition, another several dozen new films will live on the website in our Film Library. For more information and to enter the contest, visit the Real Food Media website.
