PICK UP FREE END-OF-SEASON SUNFLOWERS SATURDAY AT GRANT PARK
WHO: Sunflower fans, gardening enthusiasts, crafters and nature lovers.
WHAT: Kick off the harvest season with the Chicago Park District and take home free organic sunflowers. At this time in the season, most of the withered sunflowers are perfect for harvesting or other projects.
WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
WHERE: East side of Buckingham Fountain, just west of Lake Shore Drive, between Jackson and Balbo
MORE: This summer, Chicagoans and visitors alike enjoyed the Chicago Park District’s mass planting of 15,000 sunflowers that reached towering heights of up to 12 feet.
In the spirit of recycling, the Chicago Park District is harvesting the sunflowers and sharing with the public on a first come, first served basis. While supplies last.
The harvested sunflowers could be used for multiple purposes. For example, to create a bird feeder, simply dry the heads in a cool, dark place, poke a hole through the head and hang it outdoors to share the seeds with feathered friends.
