Good afternoon FFF Educators,

The garden season is not over for the year! Don’t forget that October is National Farm to School Month, and a great time to harvest easy salad bar vegetables like greens and carrots.

1. National Farm to School Month
National Farm to School Month was designated by Congress in 2010 to demonstrate the growing importance of farm to school programs as a means to improve child nutrition, support local economies and educate children about the origins of food. Use their resources in the classroom to highlight the importance of healthy, local fruits and vegetables. 2. Illinois Food Scrap Coalition
The final stakeholder forum is on October 22nd, and whether you compost at your school or are just looking for ideas, please consider attending! These Food Scrap Composting Challenges and Solutions in Illinois Stakeholder Forums will help to advance commercial food scrap composting across the state. Please be a part of the solution!

Wrap Up Session: October 22, 2014 – North-Central Illinois, at Parke Regency in Bloomington/Normal from 1 to 5 p.m. Register at www.ilcswma.org/conference.

3. Local and Regional Food Summit
Attend the fourth annual Local and Regional Food Summit and learn from leaders in the local and regional food industry on all the different projects taking shape. Speakers will include those from the retail grocery, foodservice distribution, university foodservice, food hub, specialty crops, meat processing, dairy, value-added products, community supported agriculture organization and more!
The event will be held at Heartland Community College, Astroth Community Education Center, 1500 West Raab Road, Normal, IL. from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This one-day event is hosted by the Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Department of Agriculture and Heartland Community College. Registration is first come, first served. 4. School Garden Grants
The Whole Foods Foundation school garden grant deadline is approaching on October 31st. The School Garden Grant program provides a $2,000 monetary grant to a K-12 school, or a non-profit working in partnership with a K-12 school, to support a new or existing edible garden on school grounds. Go here to apply: https://www.wholekidsfoundation.org/index.php/schools/school-garden-grant-program
