Midi on Frescobaldi 4.0- Mac

Mac M3 OS 14.7.4
Qsynth 0.9.1
(I am still on OS 14.7.4 for fear that the excellent accounting program KMyMoney 5.3.1 will not run on OS 15.x.)
Frescobaldi 3.3.0 (started from terminal) plays midi files
Frescobaldi 4.0.1 (started from the app) does not. Occasionally I hear a random note, but mostly silence.
Lilypond settings are the same for both versions.
What can I try?
