Splash screen on Linux displays as blank grey rectangle

Frescobaldi 2.0.9 on Linux Mint 14 amd64. If I enable splash screen in preferences, it just displays as a blank grey rectangle. I also checked on a 64-bit Windows 8 laptop with Frescobaldi installed, and there I do see a graphic on the splash screen.

p.s. I should have added that Frescobaldi was installed by running 

sudo python setup.py install

and when I check after the install completed, splash.png exists and is in the folder /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/frescobaldi_app/splashscreen.

Same here. In my experience, first launch of Frescobaldi in current
Gnome session shows the splashscreen; subsequent ones do not. This is
more or less what I can remember but I have not tested it
exhaustively.
