to Frescobaldi

I have a problem importing xml files into Finale v25 and recieve an error attached above as "Finale_XML.png" Can you perhaps explain where the error occurs and whether or not it is possible to correct.

1. I open the file "Karlskorna-Kl1.ly" in the editor Frescobaldi v3.0.1 which has an integrated Lilypond compiler. This allows me to compile the music and generate a .pdf file "Karlskrona-Kl1.pdf".

2. I export the music as a .xml file to "Karlskrona-Kl1.xml"

3. I open Finale and import the .xml file getting an error, "Finale_XML.png". It is still possible to open the file but the formatting is wrong.

4. I can save this and export a .pdf to ilustrate the difference compared to the original, "Karlskrona-Kl1_Finale.pdf.

The immediate errors are:

1. Wrong time signature, missing barlines

2. Wrongly placed repeat barlines and missing 1st. and 2nd. time brackets

3. Erroneous beaming.

There are probably more, however, I offer these as initial examples.

I have executed the same procedure with MuseScore v2.3 using a musescore file and was able to generate an xml file which could be integrated into Finale without any problem which would suggest the problem lies with Frescobaldi and how it creates .xml files I have posted the above via email to in...@frescobaldi.org but not had any response. I would appreciated your analysis of the problem and any suggestions you may have.

Yours,

Hi John,

first of all it has to be stated that export to MusicXML is still very experimental (and stated as such), and I think most of the issues are related to that. When we identify a specific issue it is possible to make improvements, but they go pretty slow.

However, it would be good to also have the .ly file to properly assess the problems.

For now some thoughts/questions:

1. Wrong time signature,

I'm not sure about that. In LilyPond the choice between 2/2 and cut C is more of a *display* issue. I'd assume that you should set that within Finale too.
Could you create "empty" files with Finale, one with 2/2 and one with the C time signature, and export them to MusicXML? I'd like to see how that looks when exported from Finale.

missing barlines

I'm not sure about the current state of things within your release. The notion of automatic detection of barlines has been added to the export fairly recently and may not be present in your release yet. In that case you'd have to add bar checks to trigger barlines.

2. Wrongly placed repeat barlines and missing 1st. and 2nd. time brackets

We'd have to see the .ly file too.
There is an open pull request dealing with explicit \bar commands. I can imagine that this would be related to your issue as well.

3. Erroneous beaming.

It is a known limitation that automatic beams are not exported because it places quite some burden on the exporter. Basically it would have to recreate LilyPond's own algorithm of automatic beaming. It's not impossible to have that one day, but it's not a short-term goal.

Best
Urs

Hi Lisa,

Thankyou for getting back to me. I enclose the .ly file, the include format file and several formats of the .musicxml file:

  1. 2/2, 2/2 (beamed as 4/4), Cut Time, Cut Time (beamed as 4/4).
  2. A snip of the .xml preferences used in Finale.

Please let me know if you need more info.

Yours,

John
