"Could not start lilypond" error after compiling successfully many times

This is one of those errors that happens sporadically and I can't reproduce it at will, but every couple of days, after successfully compiling a piece several times, I will get this error message:

  Could not start /home/xxx/lilypond-2.24.4/bin/lilypond.
  Please check path and permissions.

Restarting Frescobaldi fixes it.  I can find no rhyme or reason for the error message.  The LilyPond binary is where it always is.  Does anyone know what is going on?
