Here's another thought on how to introduce French language instruction into an SFUSD elementary school.

I just found out that the Richmond District YMCA, which has an after school K-3 program in place at Lafayette ES, added an after hours Chinese language class, in response to popular demand.

The lesson here is that it may be easier to introduce a French language program by working with an existing after school provider to expand their program. They can handle fee collection, arranging for space, insurance issues, SFUSD bureaucracy and all that. This group would just need to identify a teaching resource, ideally someone already teaching at that school, but not necessarily.

I spoke briefly with the Y director, Tiffany (?), who is quite friendly.  There may be additional interesting details to their setup at Lafayette. If I understood correctly, there is some fluidity between attending the 'regular' after school program and attending the Chinese language class component.
