Hi,

Things have been slow over the holidays. I did meet with the folks
from the district before the break to take a look at what a
"bicultural/bilingual" program would look like (i.e. the "FLES option").

Time has essentially run out for 2010, with the deadline for
applications coming up this Friday January 8th. But there's always time
for 2011.

I think folks should read up a little bit on the problems the
district has had with it's Montessori program. Here's an article from
the Chronicle:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/12/07/MNLT1APV54.DTL

And here's some interesting analysis from Board of Education
Commissioner Rachel Norton (she has more on her blog):

The problems they're having at Cobb are what many people in the District
fear will be a problem with a French program: too exclusive and a way
to push out existing families from a school. The articles are worth a read.

On a personal level, we will likely try to start a French after
school program whereever our son is assigned. We won't know until at
least March though. For parents applying for 2010, there is currently a
French afterschool program at Lilienthal, and there will be a program
starting at Flynn this Spring. And if nothing works out for us at a
particular school site, we may end up leveraging the programs offered by
the Alliance Franaise. I hope that by showing real demand at a few
schools, we may be able to land some real funding to upgrade an
afterschool to a FLES.

It would be very helpful if those parents expecting to send their
children to public, SFUSD kindergarten in Fall of 2011 would write me
directly so we can start to push for something in 2011.
