Dear Eric and Paul,
After the information I sent you a few months ago, here goes the latest news about Rio's Public Bikes System
The system is already working. It begans on december 4th, now it is 3 station with 30 bikes just in Copacabana, by the end of this month / year it's going to be 8 stations with 80 bikes all of them in Copacabana. each month the system will grow to a mearby neighbourhood until 15 months, 8 neighbourhoods, 50 stations and 500 bikes.
Decenber is like a test drive month. Only 230 choseen people will get a free pass to test and report. In January it is going to be open to general public.
It is very easy to use, just register at http://www.mobilicidade.com.br/ choose the paying mode and ready to use. At the station you have to call a callcenter, type your password, station number and bike number wait for the green light and that's it. To give it back , just park it at the staion and wait for the blinking green light.
Fee is going to be 10 reais a week, 30 a month and 350 for one year at a rate around 2.5 reais/dollar or 3.1 reais/euro. The first 30 minutes riding are free.
