This is the thread for discussing various aspects of the government
and police interactions we require in the project.
The basic ideas have been mentioned in the blog, and I am reproducing
that entry below. Please go through the entry and reply with your
insights.

Government and Police interactions

* Government approval - We need to get approval from the
government authorities on this. this would mainly involve BBMP, and
maybe the Town Planning and Urban Development authorities. We need
permissions on getting space for the stations, probable sanctions for
biking lanes, legislation if required. We also need to get approvals
for the ideas and then legal tenders if required, so companies can bid
for the project, probably on a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer)
model. We need government backing on the project. Our case would be
strengthened if we had media backing, and backing by eminent
personalities.

* Police interaction -

1. Traffic police : Approval for project ( dunno if we need their
permission), inputs on project, approval for biking lanes, safety
concerns, bike stations
2. Regular police : Approval for security arrangements, possibility
of biking stations along police station compounds

So, this could translate up to Govt having to make changes (updating) in the books...that they use to run the city.

Hi,

One of the things I've come to notice while talking to people who ARE
already using private bikes in Bangalore is the lack of parking space
for bikes. Most of the places don't have space allotted for bike
parking and it's a real issue when you go to a place like MG Road and
don't have a place to park your bike.

If we can tackle that issue beforehand, by convincing local
authorities and getting space allotted in important places, we can
start having results really soon. A complete system like Velib would
take some amount of time and effort to come into place, but I think we
can start working on the parking issue in parallel. It would be
required for the final system anyways, and it would motivate many
people who already have their bikes to actually use them for small
distance commutes.

Lack of parking space in the city is a good point. This is somethign that is addressed in all bicycle friendly cities in the world.

There are multiple issues that bikers face in the city

- pollution
- lack of respect from other drivers
- no bike lanes
- no parking space

all these can and should be addressed at some point.
But we should be a ltitle careful in what you gain from addressing each issue. While I agree having bicycle parking lots in the city helps, I thikn having cycling parking lots in a place like Lalbagh (or any of the umpteen parks in the city which is flooded with people in the morning) would be a lot more visible and helpful.

BumsOnTheSaddle wanted to do this sometime back, we started - I have designs for the parking stands etc - but it fizzled out. If folks are intersted we can restart this. - http://blog.bumsonthesaddle.com/2007/11/19/bicycle-parking-in-bangalore

Lack of parking and security is a valid problem

One can contact the management in Garuda, Forum, Sigma, Total, SPAR (which I can help), Big Bazaar etc to see if they would like to promote cycling as a CSR initiative. That way each retailer can dedicate some space for parking cycles at the outlet.

Retailers should lap it up for the following reason

1) Can potentially drive footfall to their stores
2) A initiative like cycling in Bangalore, can be a CSR initiative which they can talk about

If this is tied up with the Radio Indigo "Cycling" initiative, they can help announce the locations where you can park your cycles. That should help us generate some incremental buzz
