Hello Free-Thinkers,
Well, the proverbial shit is about to hit the fan. Now is our time to
ante up and take a stand. The infamous scholarship ceremony is around
the corner and due to the conflict between students, faculty, staff,
and the board, not to mention the letter from Americans United for
Separation of Church and State, the Saddleback Foundation does not
want to plan the event this year. They are talking about Associated
Student Government planning it.
This is a great opportunity for us as a club to take a stand. ASG
will be putting a referendum on their ballot for students to vote
whether or not they want a prayer done at the scholarship ceremony,
commencement, and other school events. They are going to face a lot
of pressure from the board to keep the invocation as a part of these
programs. But it is up to us to help them not back down. We are going
to need to offer our help in planning events if they need it and also
in promoting AWARENESS on campus and in the community. We will be
having fundraisers to get shirts made, flyering like crazy, and
hopefully get enough of us involved to have tables on campus.
To other campus groups in the area of Irvine and Mission Viejo and
everything in between. You are in the voting districts of these board
members. The public has just as much right to voice their opinion as
the students here do. Please feel free to get involved.
If you have not already, please check out the Lariat article about the
issue. I believe there is a like to the YouTube video of the
invocation last year. If not, search "Saddleback Invocation" or
"Saddleback Prayer".
Plese let either Jack or myself know if you will be available to get
this off the ground. We need a dependable head count.
Thank you,
Ashley Mockett
