Invocation Resolution
Presented by Free-Thinkers Club to Senate
March 5, 2009
Whereas, the population of people which Saddleback College employs and
severs includes a vast variety of individual religious belies and
practices, and
Whereas, our mission is to facilitate an education to any and all who
seek it and it is not in the best interest of the campus community nor
is it in the realm of our authority to represent students, faculty,
staff or the general community in religious matters, and
Whereas, we wish to leave the decision of whether, how, when, where,
and whom to worship to each individual, and
Whereas, the Board of Trustees of The Southern California Community
College District has denied numerous formal request by Saddleback
College and Irvine Valley College Academic Senates, the Associated
Student Government of Saddleback College, and the statewide Academic
Senate to cease the practice of leading worship (prayer) at college
events and trainings, and
Whereas, we consider the Board of Trustees’ approval of tax-payer
funds to hire legal council to perpetuate the practice of religions
invocation that is not wanted by the students or faculty to be
irresponsible, and
Resolved that Associated Student Government of Saddleback College
opposes the inclusion of any school lead worship, including prayer at
the Scholarship Awards Ceremony; the Commencement Ceremony; any in-
service; staff training event; or any other official college or
district event at which students, faculty, staff are in or might
reasonably be expected to be in, attendance, and
Resolved, that Associated Student Government supports the inclusion of
a moment of Silence, Quiet Contemplation, or Reflection in any such
event, and
Resolved, that this resolution be entirely read to the Board of
Trustees by the Associated Student Government President or her
designee at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of
Trustees, and be it further
Resolved, that a copy of this resolution be delivered to the Board of
Governors for the California Community Colleges along with the
resolution of the Saddleback College Academic Senate to support their
request for intervention to stop the inclusion of prayers at college
and district events.
