Hi,

I happened to play around with Spell checkers in notepad++ and found it is possible to run Tamil Spell check with little configuration. There are 2 spell checker plugins in notepad++. SpellChecker and DSpellCheck.

SpellChecker uses GNU aspell. While there are files for aspell targetting linux, I didnt spend much time to get Tamil dictionary files which would work on Windows. (Having aspell 0.6 on windows itself was not straight forward).

DSpellCheck supports both GNU aspell and Hunspell. Thanks to the work done by Solthiruthi team, I got dictionary files from Solthiruthi and now I have spell check working :). I had to use old dictionary files as the newer ones are split and this plugin seems to support only 1 dic file. Any reason why dic files are seperated ? Also, is there a reason why these files are not used in Openoffice and not present in those mirrors? Is it just because we just didnt both to upload to OoO??

Notepad++ has this feature to autocomplete words that are already typed in the same document. However its slightly irritating if suggestion pops up just after Mei character. To avoid this, follow the setting below and autocomplete works smooth and will pop up suggestions after 2nd Tamil character.

Settings -> Preferences -> Autocompletion. (From 4th character)

Thanks for reading through.

Yes, you can spell check now. All you have to do is install DSpellCheck plugin from plugin manager. Place the dictionary files (download from https://github.com/thamizha/thamizha-solthiruthi/tree/master/solthiruthi%200.1/firefox-extension/thamizha_solthiruthi/dictionaries) in the path specified in DSpellCheck extension settings.

You can place the Tamil dictionary files in the same path as English dictionary files. Please find attached my settings screenshot.

I don't think Tamil dictionaries are available in open office mirrors, so placing files manually is only option.

Sorry for the trouble

Welcome. Happy to know this improves productivity of Tamil Web developer, never imagined the use case.

You can change the Hunspell config path to somewhere outside the default location (Program Files) and try adding user defined words to dictionary. It creates a UserDic.dic file. The reason you are getting the error is, normal user is unable to write files into Program Files. You can alternatively run notepad++ as Administrator to overcome, although doing it everytime might be cumbersome.

Please explain the steps followed and what is not working?
