Was this sent to the entire Freespace mailing list?

If so, this should have been discussed with the group prior to sending an email soliciting donations.

You guys all know I love and support ReAllocate but I think this kind of email going out to our mailing list warrants a discussion.

I think it's inappropriate.

Who sent it out?

Dear Freespacer-

I’m writing to thank you for participating in freespace and becoming a part of the larger ReAllocate community—helping us connect people with purpose for a more equitable and sustainable planet. 2013 was an astonishing year for ReAllocate and I’d like to take a moment to share a couple highlights from the year, let you know where we’re headed, and give you the opportunity to donate or become a member at reallocate.org/donate.

[freespace] is an amazing project to foster creativity, community, civic innovation. Born out of The National Day of Civic Hacking, [freespace] took it to a whole new level, in the end providing the space for 3 months of community driven projects and events. [freespace] was presented all the way to the White House and is poised now to extend its reach globally.

In addition to [freespace] ReAllocate took on 21 new projects and our volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours of expert volunteer time. For one project, we found a recent safety engineering graduate, with 7 years of crash-scene investigation in The Minnesota Highway Patrol, to help improve road safety in Tanzania. Did you know traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for kids over 5 in sub-Saharan Africa? A couple other projects are a skills-training facility in Uganda with 3D printers, and a project to stop the poisoning of indigenous people with polluted water from Lake Atitlan in Guatemala.

HACKtivations, our one-day hacking events focused 2,500 hours of volunteer time on sustainable social good projects such as MedLink, an app that connects doctors and patients in developing countries to provide remote diagnosis and access to medicine. HACKtivations build a community and defy the New York Times image of  self absorbed techies who use San Francisco as their playground and disappear on big white buses during the day.

In 2014 we will expand with ReAllocate Online, our open-source platform for connecting social impact projects with skilled professionals. We’ve been developing it throughout the year and are about to share it with the world. As a part of our family, we’d like to give you a peek at what we’ve been building and be one of our first users by signing up at beta.reallocate.org

What’s next?  We’ve done a lot of groundwork to poise us for an amazing upcoming year.  We’re looking to continue to grow our network to 1,000 members, onboard 100 new projects onto ReAllocate Online, and host 6 HACKtivations. In doing so we estimate that we will be able to help improve the lives of over 500,000 people globally. This is achievable with a very moderate budget by tapping vast pools of expert talent. The reality is, there are a lot of people that want to help, but don’t know where or how. We deliver that to you and our community.

We have set a modest fundraising goal for 2014. We are setting out to raise $250,000 to hire 2 people who will serve as our Chief Technology Officer and Executive Director.  We need to build our infrastructure to organize and coordinate all of the great work that ReAllocators are contributing and hack on solutions to change our city and planet.

As the end of the year approaches, I’d like to thank those that have supported us and welcome new supporters. As a registered 501(c)3 public charity your donations are tax-deductible and the impact of your money is greatly amplified through the large number of expert volunteer time it unlocks.

Donations can be made online at reallocate.org/donate or checks payable to ReAllocate can be sent to the address at the bottom of this message. THANK YOU for your support and we’re excited to have you be a part of creating a more equitable and sustainable planet.

Let’s ReAllocate!

"I thought someone co-opted your list and basically tried to steal credit for being the founder of Freespace. It seemed like a really janky move.

I've never heard of ReAllocate and have never seen it linked to Freespace, so I was really confused.

Sorry this happened!"

This brings up a valid point of ReAllocate not being associated with [ freespace ] and they should get some credit but this is not the emotional response any of us want.

This one is on me. I did not intend for this to be the message that was sent out regarding ReAllocate and the nature of the relationship with freespace. We have had pressure from our board to message to the freespace list and it was not intended to be done today or with disregard for the core team.

What was sent today was a poorly thought out addition to the messaging that was sent to the ReAllocate community lists.

I'm sorry for allowing this to be sent to the freespace list without discussing it with the team and properly communicating the message that ReAllocate is proud to be founding partner and proud of the successes of freespace. What was sent is instead being received as a hijacking of the freespace community and is not serving our collective causes.

I'm open to suggestions on how to apologize to freespace community at large for this miscommunication.

Kyle
