when inserting an e-mail link into a web page, is there any way of inserting
the e-mail subject header automatically?

You can try
<A HREF="MAILTO:insertemailaddress?SUBJECT=whateveryouwant">Email me</A>

but it doesn't work on all browsers. I'd stick to a mailform CGI script
for maximum compatibility.

I'm not sure which browsers/mail programs don't work with it, but
(if you don't have access to CGI) it's best to give the full
address somewhere on the page so that viewers can cut and paste
if needs be.
